The Button That Made Publishing Feel Easy

Blogger in October 1999 introduces itself through a login box, a new-user form, and a plain explanation: it is a free, automated weblog publishing tool. The metadata names weblogs, FTP updates, Pyra, web management, and site updating.

The copy is wonderfully direct. You make posts through a form, and the results show up on your own site, with your own design. Blogger uses a template and offers a "Save to Server" button that automatically FTPs the new page. The tone even jokes that it works by magic before explaining the machinery.

This page matters because it lowers the threshold for personal publishing. Before social platforms absorbed status updates and essays, maintaining a frequently updated site required enough technical fluency to discourage many people. Blogger turned that work into a form and a button.

The page's blue background and simple forms feel modest, but the idea is huge. It separates writing from site maintenance. That separation helped create a culture where individuals could publish serially, personally, and quickly without becoming webmasters first.
