Title: DRUDGE REPORT®

The Headline as Siren

The Drudge Report in December 1998 is nearly all urgency. The title carries the brand, while the visible page leads with Clinton, censure, impeachment, and the punchy line "MAKE IT THREE!!!" Below that, wire links stack into a hard, fast news dashboard.

The design is stark because the point is velocity. There is no lush magazine frame, no civic homepage architecture, no reassuring newspaper hierarchy. Headlines are treated as triggers.

Historically, the page shows how political news online began to prize immediacy, aggregation, and the charged link. It did not need to look polished to feel powerful. It needed to look ahead of everyone else.

This page matters because it captures an early form of the web as rumor mill, tip sheet, and news terminal. Its aesthetic is almost anti-design, but that anti-design became a style of authority: if it looks raw, maybe it is closer to the action.
