Python Before the Boom

Python's May 1997 homepage is scholarly, open, and community-minded. It links to software, documentation, the Python Software Activity, workshops, SIGs, FAQ, and search. The headings include a conference call for papers, news, software, documentation, and acknowledgements.

The page's summary says Python is free and non-proprietary, then asks visitors to help keep it that way by joining the PSA. That framing is revealing. Python is not yet a global default for data science, automation, education, and web services. It is a language community asking for participation.

Historically, the page captures Python before mass adoption, but after its values were already clear: readability, openness, documentation, and organized community.

The design is plain because the emphasis is on continuity. Conferences, SIGs, FAQs, software, and docs form the social machinery around the language. The later boom did not come from nowhere. It grew from pages like this, where a language was also a commons.
