Dell's Minimal Front Door
Dell's December 1996 page is almost shockingly sparse: copyright, terms of use, and a note that the site is best viewed with browser versions 3.0 and higher. The title simply welcomes visitors to www.dell.com.
That sparseness is useful. It shows a company still working through what a commercial homepage should do, even as direct PC sales were becoming a natural fit for the web.
Historically, Dell would become one of the clearest examples of online configuration, ordering, and customer self-service. This early page sits before that expectation feels fully formed.
The page matters because it captures the awkward threshold between corporate presence and transactional web commerce. The site is there, the brand is there, the browser requirement is there, but the richer buying experience is still implied more than displayed.
