Oracle Lists the Enterprise Web
Oracle's December 1996 homepage opens with "Welcome to www.oracle.com" and then lists Servers, Networking, OLAP, Tools, Applications, Gateways, Groupware, Web, Licensing Terms, and platform-specific product information.
The page is utilitarian, almost inventory-like. It does not need a grand narrative because its audience is looking for enterprise software categories and product paths.
Historically, this page shows the business web as a navigation problem. Large software companies had sprawling catalogs, and the homepage became a way to route buyers, developers, and administrators into the right stack.
Oracle's page matters because it preserves the web as enterprise index. Behind each word sits a different layer of corporate computing. The homepage is a map of the systems that businesses were bringing online: databases, apps, groupware, gateways, and web infrastructure.
