Title: Coming Soon

MTV Online Says This Bites

MTV's December 1996 page is almost nothing: a "Coming Soon" title and the line "This bites...click to go to MTV Online." That tiny phrase is more useful than a polished placeholder would have been.

It preserves a brand voice trying to enter the web without sounding corporate. MTV does not apologize in formal language. It jokes, shrugs, and points users onward.

Historically, the page matters because television brands were learning how to translate attitude into interactive space. MTV's power came from tone, speed, music, youth culture, and visual identity. A static web page had to carry that energy with very little.

The result is minimal but revealing. The web presence is not fully there yet, but the voice is. That voice tells us how entertainment brands understood the early web: unfinished, awkward, but too important to ignore.
